10 Members Of The Simpsons Family You Forgot Existed

5. Arthur Bouvier

Although never seen on-screen, Arthur Bouvier still has one of the most memorable moments of all the extended Simpson family members. An uncle of the Simpson kids, according to Marge (though some believe it's actually her uncle), as she tells it, he apparently went crazy one day and embarked upon a shooting spree, with the motto of "shoot 'em all and let God sort 'em out." This reference is made in the season five episode The Boy Who Knew Too Much. The full exchange, during which Bart looks to her for advice on whether to tell what he knows about a court case involving Mayor Quimby's nephew, is as follows:
Marge: Well, Bart, your Uncle Arthur used to have a saying: "Shoot 'em all and let God sort them out." Unfortunately, one day he put his theory into practice. It took 75 Federal Marshals to bring him down. Now let's never speak of this again. Bart: Mom, what if I can get this guy off the hook? Should I do it? Marge: Honey, you should listen to your heart... and not the voices in your head, like a certain uncle did one gray December morn.
This is probably one of the best, darkly comical moments of The Simpsons in the early years, and the best depiction of a character never actually seen on-screen. Marge's insistence that that they never speak of it again, despite her bring it up (twice) just adds to the hilarity of it.
