The Simpsons: 10 Most Controversial Moments Ever
8. Offending Australia
You can count this among the really weird ones. On the face of it, the episode shouldn’t have been anything too complicated. Bart was accused of fraud by the Government of Australia over claims of how the water is supposed to drain Down Under. In order to clear his name, the Simpsons travel to Australia. It’s utter nonsense, but of the Simpsons kind.
Unfortunately, this little trip ended up offending the real Australian government, along with scores of other people.
During their visit, the Simpsons put on a supposedly Australian accent that viewers pointed out wasn’t accurate. In addition to that they used references such as baby eating dingoes and invasive amphibians, which did not sit well with the Aussies either.
Things got so bad that this episode was actually brought up in the Australian parliament. While the potential sight of parliamentarians arguing over a satirical show is absolutely spectacular, it still wasn’t enough to give the writers any second thoughts, whose only response was to joke about the whole fiasco.
