The Simpsons: 10 Most Controversial Moments Ever

2. Mocking The Catholic Church

Offending the Catholic Church is one sure-fire way of creating a major storm of controversy. Of course the Simpsons don’t really care, so in the episode, “Sunday, Cruddy Sunday”, they did just that.

The episode included a made-up Superbowl commercial, which featured three barely clothed women. Pretty normal, right? Unfortunately, if you are the Catholic Church, one of the women, had a crucifix nestled within her chest, in rather provocative fashion.

Still, this alone may not have caused that big of a stir. The only problem was that the show didn’t stop there. The visual was accompanied by a voice over saying, “The Catholic Church, we’ve made a few changes”.

That was more than enough to set off the church, who came down hard on the show and the network. In the end, this was one of the rare cases where the show actually buckled under the pressure, being forced to edit the scene and remove the direct reference to the Catholic Church.
