The Simpsons: 10 Most Hated Characters

The beloved show's not so beloved characters.

You can’t bring a TV show to screens for 30-plus years, stretched across a staggering five different decades without creating a few memorable characters. Even with this in mind, the sheer amount of men, women, children, and people in bumblebee costumes that live in Springfield is monstrous.

Over the years the population of an entire town has been brought to life, from the main and secondary characters, all the way down to the obscure and one-episode wonders. Not all of them however, have been as popular as those around them.

For some, this was always the intention. There has to be some sort of villain or antagonist, even in Springfield, but generally these have been so well written over time that the likes of Mr. Burns, Sideshow Bob, and Hank Scorpio are among the most loved characters in the show.

There are exceptions of course, but the majority of characters on this list are those that either had their stories ruined or just weren’t able to connect with audiences the way that they were supposed to. Whichever way you look at it, there are plenty of Springfieldianites that fans just simply don’t like.

10. Marvin Monroe

The 138th Episode Spectacular asked the question, which popular Simpsons characters have died in the past year? Along with Bleeding Gums Murphy, Marvin Monroe was confirmed to be both deceased, and never popular. Murphy at least has a couple of strong episodes to his name, but not Monroe.

First appearing as the psychiatrist Homer turned to to solve his family issues, it was sort of the point that he was incredibly annoying. Unfortunately, he was made too annoying, and was retired from the show in just season seven.

The show suffered in absolutely no way, shape, or form for Monroe’s absence, as he even became too annoying for Matt Groening. If that was how someone with an actual reason to connect with him felt, just imagine how fans did. Neither his creator nor his voice actor wanted anything to do with him.

Though he was only in a handful of episodes, and was seemingly confirmed to be dead several times, Monroe was pointlessly brought back to life for one scene in season 15. This led to absolutely nothing, and served only to annoy the fans who thought they were happy in the knowledge they didn’t have to listen to that voice again.
