The Simpsons: 10 Most Heartfelt Episodes

4. Mother Simpson – Season 7, Episode 8

Mother Simpson
Fox

After faking his own death to avoid going into work, Homer is reunited with his mother Mona, who he thought had died two decades prior.

The family are quick to bond with Mona, who we learn was involved with a group of hippies back in 1969 and was forced to go into hiding after taking part in an ill fated germ warfare protest.

Guest star Glenn Close is wonderful as Homer’s mother, sweet and passionate for her causes. It is like a cherry on top of an already perfect cake to see that Homer actually inherited his famous catchphrase “D’oh!” from his mother.

This episode features another one of the most emotional endings in the show’s history, where Homer is forced to say goodbye to his mother again when she is discovered. After she leaves with another group of hippies, Homer sits on his car hood watching the stars long after she drives away and the credits roll. A poignant, captivating way to close out the episode.
