The Simpsons: 15 BEST Golden Age Episodes
2. Homer's Enemy
Widely regarded as the ultimate Simpsons experience, just as much as it is one of the most despised entries in the canon, Homer's Enemy is an exceptional demonstration and dismantling of the idealised "American dream", pitting Frank Grimes - a firm believer in the system - against Homer, a man who doesn't exactly embody the same ethos.
The philosophy of this episode makes it something to marvel at. Despite the spectacular jokes - all of which poke fun at Grimes' expense - and contrary to the title, Homer doesn't actively engage in any form of conflict with Grimes. Grimes, instead directs his hate at the innocent party of Homer, when he really should be aiming it at the corrupt system that has condemned him to his shambolic life.
Considered to be something as a turning point for the series, especially due to the extremely polarising feedback received for the episode - some found it abhorrent, whilst others were beyond impressed - the humour isn't the only aspect that takes a dark turn; the storytelling itself does.
Actually, these two elements combine to create what is potentially still the darkest joke in the history of The Simpsons. We'll give you a hint; it's at the end of the episode.
