The Simpsons: 15 BEST Golden Age Episodes
1. Bart Gets an F
Only the first episode in season 2, and still the most viewed opening episode of any season in television history - which it will likely retain until the end of time due to TV's lack of modern industry - Bart Gets an F is an A+++ experience for any viewer, Simpsons fan or not. The episode is structured seamlessly, while incorporating a vicariously sensitive, but overall exceedingly important critique of the school system; a system which is still yet to change since this episodes airing all the way back in 1990.
The plot of the episode is possibly the most basic in the entirety of the show. The execution, satire and commentary on the contrary are exceptional. It's simple storyline features Bart repeatedly failing a test that he studied hard for - until the point of genuine exhaustion - with the school coming to the imminent conclusion that he must repeat the year despite his lack of intelligence.
The emotional roller coaster that the episode imbues is heartbreaking, as Bart comes to terms with the fact that he's simply rather inept when it comes to academic study. This in turn causes the poor boy to break down in a fit of almost existential doubt, knowing full well that his future isn't as bright as other students around him.
The ending, of course, rectifies this in place of the traditional happy ending, but only through a technicality. The elation felt when watching, though, is as overwhelming for the audience as it is for Bart. An absolute classic, not to be missed.
