The Simpsons: 15 Modern Episodes You Need To Watch

5. The President Wore Pearls (Season 15, Episode 3)

Simpsons 8
Fox

"Based on the advice of our lawyers, we swear we have never heard of a musical based on the life of Eva Perón.”

Another great send-up of a classic movie, this episode saw The Simpsons give its own take on musicals. When Martin Prince is forced to resign as student body president after a school casino night ends in a riot (this is Springfield so of course it does), Lisa runs against Nelson Muntz for the vacant role. The popular Nelson is initially the favourite but Lisa wins over her fellow students with a song about how she'll fight for their rights.

However, after the teachers use Lisa as a scapegoat to get rid of music, gym and art from the curriculum, Lisa realises she's been corrupted by the power and joins her classmates in protest, until she's transferred to another school for the 'Academically Gifted and Troublesome'. The song spoofs are spot on and the whole thing comes to a perfectly tragicomic conclusion courtesy of the typically oblivious Homer.
