The Simpsons: 15 Modern Episodes You Need To Watch

1. Eternal Moonshine Of The Simpson Mind (Season 19, Episode 9)

Simpsons 8
Fox

"You come to me for help rememberin'? That's like asking your horse to do your taxes...which I did in 1998" - Grandpa Simpson

The most critically acclaimed episode of recent years, it's no surprise that this episode was another which was once considered for a series finale. One of the best ever Homer-centric episodes, the often dark episode sees Homer wake up the morning after a drunken bender and a Forget-Me-Shot courtesy of Moe, to find the house deserted and jumbled memories of Marge and Duffman together.

Attempting to piece back together the events of the previous evening, what follows is a great parody of Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with Homer journeying through his own memories with Bart and Lisa to both emotional and hilarious effect; he accidentally erases the memory of his first kiss, Bart beats Homer up at ages 10 and 20, and even in his wildest imagination, Homer can't fathom a world where he doesn't have to wait 35 minutes for pizza.

The conclusion to the episode would have been a great way for the series to come to a close, and when Matt Groening and co- do finally call time on the show, they'll have some job doing it as artfully as this.
