Named in 1997 as the greatest Simpsons episode of all time by TV Guide, this is generally held as the best episode of the first season; the writers had found their feet and though the laughs aren't as side-splitting or as stupid as they have been at different times over the 25 seasons, it was nonetheless very entertaining.

The episode was one of the first to play on the rivalry between Bart and Principal Skinner for who is Springfield Elementary's real top dog, and while Skinner is a lot more efficient as a force here (managing to get Bart basically deported as punishment) than he would later become, it's the seed of a great long-running battle.
