The original and still one of the best Treehouse Of Horror episodes, the first went with a classic story in the shape of The Raven and proved that a completely modern retelling wasn't necessary even for the Simpsons audience. The Raven remains one of the most enchanting sequences from the entire show, even though Matt Groening famously worried it would be seen as too pretentious.

The same episode saw introductions for Kang and Kodos - now staples of the Halloween episodes - voiced by the irrepressible James Earl Jones (who voiced all three parts of the episode). The episodic set-up shunned the usual Simpsons sitcom format, and proved to be a success in the long term, landing on many Best Of lists compiled since it aired.
