Sometimes, these church signs need context, because they play a larger role in the plot of the episode. That's the case here. There's nothing particularly funny about Homer dying, other than the fact that, as Homer, an American cartoon icon, he pretty much can't die, and we all know it. In season thirteen's Poppa's Got A Brand New Badge, however, Homer sets up his own private security force, Springshield, and pretty much takes over for the real police. When he goes up against Fat Tony, everyone pretty much assumes he'll be toast, hence the rather fitting sign.
