Season 23 Set in season twenty-three, "Holidays of Future Passed" was better than it had any right to be. Future themed episodes, as you may have realized by now, are a very mixed bag, and have never really been stand-outs within the series. Why do they keep producing them then? Well, for the most part, because after 500 episodes, it's hard to keep coming up with ideas. "Holidays of Future Passed" is a little different however. A rumour among fans is that it was produced as a series finale prior to the show being picked up for extension by Fox. While that rumour has never been fully confirmed, it makes sense: the Simpsons started on a holiday themed episode, so why not have them end on one, in the future? The laughs in "Holidays of Future Passed" are a little higher than most modern-day episodes, and it actually ranked relatively high in WhatCulture's Christmas Themed Simpsons countdown as well. The episode sees both Simpsons "kids" growing as parents in their now-adult world, a frozen grandpa being kept in stasis by Homer even after a cure for what ails him has been found (reason: he's too much of a cranky old man to deal with), and Moe's bar as a frequent crime scene. Whether it really was a possible series finale, or just lucked out, "Holidays of Future Passed" is one of really two decent future-themed episodes of The Simpsons.
