Which Springfield residents rise to the top, and which plummet to the bottom?

The land of TV cartoons is populated with some pretty big names. Family Guy, South Park, Bob's Burgers, Bojack Horseman, the list goes on and on. But, each of these shows - while unique and brilliant in their own rights - have to thank one godfather of a series for proving that animated projects designed for adults could become TV juggernauts, and that is, of course, The Simpsons.

This epic cartoon - created by Matt Groening - started as a satirical attack on the tropes of the family sitcom, painting itself as counter-culture. However, in the modern-day, it has become the culture. It's easy to talk about how far the show has fallen, as its glory days are far behind it yet it just keeps going. However, there's still plenty to look back on and appreciate.

The Simpsons' vast array of characters has become one of the most expansive rosters in all of TV. Each role in the show has a unique design, personality and impact on the plot, so looking through and ranking all the leading characters from worst to best is prime material for seeing what makes/made this show such a runaway success.

There are a lot of characters to get through, so strap yourselves in, because this is going to be a long one.

28. Carl Carlson

We start with the lesser half of Lenny and Carl - that being Carl Carlson. Both Lenny and Carl's names play on how mundane they are supposed to be, but unlike his better half, Carl really does fall into the category of being dull.

This character acts as one of Homer's work friends and isn't seen very often outside of hanging out with him. He does pop up every now and again in the main story, but he's never the focus of the attention, and it's not hard to see why as he's quite a wet blanket.

Carl has minimal character, as he never cracks jokes and seems to be the straight man in the Lenny and Carl duo. This sadly makes him an easy choice for the lowest spot as every other character is filled to the brim with personality, yet Carl is barely filled up to his shoes.
