The Umbrella Academy Season 2: What Does The Ending Really Mean?

6. Vanya Has Finally Learned To Control Her Powers

A big focal point of the first season was the development of Vanya Hargreeves' powers and how a life of involuntary suppression rendered her unable to control them. This resulted in the impending apocalypse that Five was so desperately trying to avoid and doomed the Academy to three years of separation at the beginning of the '60s (well it was either that or death).

This season, Vanya's amnesia allowed her to learn more about herself and this inadvertently benefited her when it came to her powers. Though she had a few lapses along the way, she eventually remembered everything and, piecing her two lives together, finally mastered how to use her powers without causing an apocalypse.

She's not completely there yet, but she handled herself well in the final battle and was also able to save Harlan. Considering all she went through in the previous season - not-to-mention the fact that she didn't cause a second apocalypse - it's safe to call that progress.
