After 17 years, Adult Swim staple The Venture Bros. has been cancelled, according to series creator Jackson Publick via his Twitter account.

The cancellation comes two years after the show concluded it's seven season run in October 2018. The creators had expressed interest in producing an eighth season, and plans to move the series to HBO Max has been discussed but, if Publick's statement is anything to go by, have fallen through.

Fans, which include some high-profile creators in their own right, in Publick's replies expressed both disappointment and gratitude for the series, which had been on the air since 2004.

Voice cast member James Urbaniak, who played Dr. Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture through all seven seasons, expressed similar sentiments of his own.

Adult Swim tweeted out a statement expressing interest in "continuing the Venture Bros. story", but what form this would take and when is unclear.

The Venture Bros. first aired in 2004. The brainchild of Publick (real name Christopher McCulloch), the series followed the Ventures - a family of hapless adventurers and a parody of 1960s adventure cartoons like Jonny Quest.

McCulloch was the voice of Hank, one half of the titular teenage brothers, with Michael Sinterniklaas as his brother Dean. The two were well-meaning but grossly incompetent, frequently getting killed and replaced by identical clones with no memory of their violent deaths. Other cast members included Urbaniak, Paul Boocock, and Patrick Warburton (Family Guy).
