2. Hershel
Hershel was a cool old man, and a mentor to Rick. He was always there, talking in his calm voice, advising Rick and the others on what to do in order to be good human beings. For these reasons his death at the hands of the Governor was one of the most unpleasant in the show so far.
The setting and playing out of the scene made it even worse. The Governor comes to the prison gates and puts Michonne’s sword to Hershel’s neck. Rick comes down and, in a touching speech, attempts to stop all the violence, so that no one else dies. Soothing music plays in the background as Rick talks and for a second it seems that the Governor may be willing to walk away.
Hershel smiles and the Governor draws the sword away. Then he calls Rick a liar and cuts through half of Hershel’s head. A masterfully devastating death in The Walking Dead.
