The Walking Dead: 10 Best Episodes
3. Clear (S3 E12)
Lennie James puts in the best acting turn of the entire series when he returns as Morgan for the first time since the pilot, although not quite the same Morgan that Rick initially met.
This Morgan was the broken version of Rick’s one-time ally. Damaged by grief and despair following the loss of his son Duane, his only motivation was to clear the area of walkers.
The episode highlights the dangers of isolation in the post-apocalyptic world. Rick tried to persuade Morgan to return with him to the prison, to be a part of his community. But Morgan must clear. James did an exceptional job of making him look like a lost cause.
That there was not an immediate resolution to his trauma made Morgan’s eventual reappearance all the more satisfying. While a later Morgan-devoted instalment - He’s Not Here - delves into his enlightenment and features more fine work from James, it does not fit as seamlessly into the timeline as this season three instalment.
Elsewhere in Clear, Michonne established herself as a trusted member of the group as she helped Carl find a sentimental picture. The Walking Dead cast is now so big and this is a reminder that the best episodes can be those that focus on just a few elite characters.
