The Walking Dead: 10 Characters Who Stuck Around Too Long

3. Philip Blake - The Governor

The Walking Dead Beth
AMC

Played by: David Morrissey

First appearance: Walk With Me (S3E3)

Last appearance: Too Far Gone (S4E8)

Now, hear me out on this one - David Morrissey was insanely good as The Walking Dead's big bad, and stole some of the most memorable moments (heads in the fish tank anyone?).

However, The Governor's storyline was clearly framed in two halves and went on just a little too long. Also, love her or loathe her, The Governor was responsible for the death of Andrea - an influential part of the comic books, and still going strong at issue #159.

The Walking Dead's wandering psycho should've walked off into the distance after his failed attack on the prison, but instead he slaughtered his entire team. Woodbury was a distant memory, and so was the threat of The Governor. Under the alias of Brian Heriot, the whole out for revenge mantra just didn't stick properly. As the fully unhinged Guv limped off to lick his wounds he took up life in a tent, and an even angrier Governor returned.

It wasn't second time lucky as he coordinated an ever more disastrous attack that lost him his life. We loved the character for the cunning and charming man that had ruled Woodbury - by the end of his life there was little of that man left.
