The Walking Dead: 10 Great Moments When The Show Ignored The Comic

7. The Governor Comes To Town

When David Morrisey's Governor became the focus of the series during season four, giving us insight into his personality and turning him into a tragic anti-hero, it gave birth to some of the finest episodes the show has ever seen. The episodes "Live Bait" and "Dead Weight" gave Morrisey a chance to fine tune the Governor, creating a character that seemed to be something much more than a typical super-villain. After having failed to take the prison from Rick in season three and senselessly slaughtering his own people, the Governor found himself falling in with a new group of survivors. While with this group, the Governor, at least on the surface, had found a new purpose. But as his ability to protect his new extended family dwindled, so did the Governor's sense of clarity. Loading up with a tank and an army, the Governor pounced on the prison and committed his darkest atrocity by killing Hershel Greene with Michonne's sword. While it was a fate that was meant for Tyreese in Kirkman's comic, the producers smart to give it to the beloved character, fully cementing the Governor's status as tv's most hated man. By giving Hershel the death that claimed Tyreese on-page, it made it very clear that the Governor had fully become the evil jerk that we love from the comics. Had the Governor's inevitable death come in season three, as so many fans believed it should have, it would have been difficult to understand why he was on this dark path to begin with. We all miss Hershel, but his death was a necessary one, as it was the final stepping stone to create one of TV's greatest villains.
