Fans of the TV series will be well aware that Rick's one-time best friend and workmate Shane Walsh is killed at the conclusion of the second season, shortly before Walkers invade Hershel's farm. Shane has slowly slipped into insanity caused by an obsession with Rick's wife, Lori, and Rick is forced to kill Shane in self defence. Shane soon turns, confirming that all humans are infected whether they are bitten or not, and his zombified corpse is put down by Carl.

In the comics, Shane is shot dead by Carl Grimes in issue six, the boy defending Rick against an insane Shane, with his body buried by the group. This occurs long before the survivors reach the Farm, and, more notably, before they discover that everyone is infected and will therefore turn regardless of how they died.

When Rick does make this gruesome discovery, he embarks on a solo trip back to Shane's grave, digging up his undead corpse and putting him down as a final service to their former friendship. However, he fails to re-bury Shane's corpse, instead leaving him to rot.
