In the comics, the group encounters Tyreese much earlier than in the TV series, while on the road shortly after Shane's death. Tyreese is accompanied by his teenage daughter Julie and her boyfriend Chris, who had been staying with them when the apocalypse began. All three are warmly welcomed into the group.

Like most teens, Chris and Julie yearn to be treated like adults, and so resent being regularly lumped with the job of babysitting the younger children, and Tyreese's regular interruptions of their attempts to have sex. However, one troubling, but overlooked issue is Chris's eagerness for he and Julie to have their own guns. They are eventually granted this privilege after a successful training session at Hershel's Farm, and it is here that the seeds of tragedy are sown.

One night, after the group has moved to the prison, Rick and Tyreese are woken by the sound of a gunshot, and upon investigation find Julie dead of a gunshot wound, with Chris holding the gun. It is revealed that the young couple had made a suicide pact so they could be together forever, but Chris fired too soon, killing Julie before she could return the favour.

A devastated Tyreese strangles Chris to death, and then, off panel, proceeds to mutilate his zombified corpse until there is nothing left of him. The storyline was likely deemed too dark to make the jump from page to screen, and Tyreese's daughter was replaced by a sister, Sasha.
