2. Carl's Death
No one saw this coming. Whenever people would discuss where the show was going next they would always cite the comics and how Carl was going to do X and Y. After all, he was really the main character after Rick. If people were placing bets on who was to die in a finale, Carl was never at the top of anyone's predictions. It just seemed so unlikely due to his prominence in the comics.
So in Season Eight when Carl was actually bitten by a walker, fans were left speechless. The future of the show and Rick's main motivation for building a better world was going to bite the dust just like everyone else. It really certified the idea that no one is safe in The Walking Dead. It doesn't matter who your favourite character is, they could die at any minute.
While a truly shocking twist, it's in an incredibly unpopular one. Many fans of the show drew the line at this point and stopped watching, and there were rumours of a poor handling of the situation when it came to informing Chandler Riggs of the drastic change.
