9. Tyreese

T-Dog The Walking Dead
AMC

We first meet Tyreese in Season 3, and over the duration of his time on the show he establishes himself as one of the key members in Rick’s band of survivors, quite different to many of the characters we see.

That’s because while he is extremely strong and capable of killing, with a hammer being his weapon of choice, he really doesn’t want to do it, and is a really compassionate and unselfish person. This is seen in the way he survives Karen’s death, forgives Carol for killing her, and becomes the main caretaker for baby Judith.

Tyreese often struggled with his own mortality and his place in the world, so it wasn’t really a surprise when he was killed off (plus, y’know, can’t have too many black characters around…) but it was a sad moment to see him go. He may have been hard on the outside, but he had a heart of gold on the inside.
