The Walking Dead: 5 Characters Who Overstayed Their Welcome (And 5 Gone Too Soon)
2. Negan – Overstayed Their Welcome
At 12 episodes and counting, it’s not the quantity that has earned Negan the ‘overstayed their welcome’ title, but rather the amount of focus the character receives versus the amount of evolution the character has experienced. Negan’s comical yet harsh presentation and speaking style were a noticeable –and welcomed- style change from the usual cast of villains on the show.
But the character received so much focus throughout season 7, arguably wedging himself in the top two most featured characters, that Negan’s shtick became increasingly repetitive. Fans reactions to his appearance on screen have gone from nervous anticipation to, “Oh, another poop joke.”
As enjoyable as Jeffrey Dean Morgan is in the role, a reduced on-screen presence in season 8 (and onward) would benefit Negan greatly. Like Jaws in 1975, Negan is most menacing when you can feel – but not see - his presence. The audience can only handle so many dueling speeches between Rick and Negan before the title of the show has to be changed from The Walking Dead to The Monologues of the Living.
