The Walking Dead: 50 Best Deaths

The Episode: Too Far Gone

How It Happened: Captured by The Governor and his people, Hershel and Michonne were then used as hostages to force Rick and the others to leave the prison, with Hershel himself being held on his knees with Michonne's katana at his throat. Rather than come to an accord with Rick, The Governor hacked Hershel's neck, and later severed his head completely off as Hershel tried to crawl away in the chaos that had ensued.

Why It Was Great: Throughout season three and the first half of season four, Hershel quickly became the new heart of the show in Dale's absence, a kindhearted, selfless man who made everyone's lives better simply by being around, and his death remains one of the most heartbreaking events of the show to date as a result.
