If killing Shane to protect his family shook Rick up, the devastating and unexpected death of his own wife in season three pushed him over the edge.
Though often the butt of fan jokes, particularly during the shows second season, Lori managed to receive a poignant sendoff, sacrificing her life so that Judith could be born while she was mending fences with Carl who would then have to make sure she didnt reanimate in the process.
1. Hershel
The Episode: Too Far Gone
By the fourth season, Hershel had become an intrinsic piece of the series and the lives of its characters.
His beheading at the hands of The Governor after risking his own life to keep hope alive during the illness that ravaged the prison was easily the most heartbreaking and affecting death the show has had to date, with the beloved characters absence still being felt even as the series heads towards its seventh season.
