The Walking Dead: 7 Things "The Distance" Got Right (And 3 It Didn't)
The Bad...
3. Some Crummy Special Effects
That action sequence was one of the best in The Walking Dead's history, but it wasn't perfect. The acting, directing and editing were firing on all cylinders, but surprisingly it was one of the few times the special effects crew tripped up. Greg Nicotero and his team have decades of Hollywood experience and, for the most part, the walkers have been frighteningly effective. There were a few shots during that big scene where all those years didn't show. In fact, a few of the gory parts had more in common with the high-camp Evil Dead B-movies Nicotero worked on towards the start of his career, where the budgets were low and so were the expectations. When a zombie was clearly a mannequin being exploded, it was fine. Under the circumstances of The Walking Dead, however, that's less acceptable. That walker that Glenn caved in the head of? So clearly a wobbly, unmoving doll that it looked super cheesy, and somewhat undercut the drama of the scene. It happened a few times, making the production look pretty darn amateur.
