The Walking Dead: 9 Things "Conquer" Got Right (And 1 It Didn't)

4. The Cursed Grimes Crew

The Walking Dead has plenty of tropes of its own. Along with using all the usual zombie genre tricks, the show has developed a bunch of tics that are by turns comforting and irritating. You know the sort, Daryl being all aloof and running away, Rick being a nutball, all of that. One of the more intriguing developments in this finale was the idea that the Grimes group of survivors are kinda...cursed? Rick basically admits as much himself, as a counterpoint to Father Gabriel's confession to Deanna that they've done terrible things and will continue to do terrible things. His appearance at the very end of the episode sees him lumping his fellow survivors together with the walkers, informing the Alexandria folk they'll always be susceptible to potential dangers wandering in. Obviously, the idea of curses are a bit silly, but the dark cloud following what are supposed to be the stars of this show adds an extra wrinkle to any future encounters with other survivors is really neat. These aren't your plain old, morally pure good guys: they're trouble, and everywhere they go tends to fall apart. But at least they're aware of it now.
