The Walking Dead Is Ending

The main show is DONE, but two spin-offs are in the works...

It's finally happening. One of the biggest TV shows of the 21st Century is finally coming to an end. AMC has announced that The Walking Dead will wrap up at the end of its 11th season in 2022.

The news dropped on AMC's blog, with the network confirming that it has ordered a supersized final season of the show consisting of 24 episodes, which will be spread across the next two years. This is on top of an extra six episodes already greenlit by AMC, dubbed Season 10C. These extras were commissioned to fill the gap of the regular Season 11 slot early next year after production was halted by the ongoing global crisis.

Overseer of all The Walking Dead TV content, Scott Gimple, said in a statement:

“What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic — and supported by the best fans in the world. We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead — brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. ‘The Walking Dead’ lives.”

As mentioned there, this won't be the end of The Walking Dead brand, as the network has also ordered two spin-off series. One of these will focus on TWD mainstays Carol and Daryl, played by Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus respectively. The two signed new multi-year contracts in 2018 which extended beyond the mainline TV show, and will presumably also cover this new endeavour. This series will be overseen by Angela Kang, the current showrunner on the main series.

The other spin-off will take a drastically different approach, and instead is being built as an anthology show set in the TV universe. This is called Tales of The Walking Dead, which promises "individual episodes or arcs of episodes focused on new or existing characters, backstories or other stand-alone experiences."

With that, Carol & Daryl (name TBD but they better not change it), Fear The Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond and three Rick Grimes movies in production, while the main show is ending, this is far from the end of the franchise.
