The Walking Dead Season 11 Review - 5 Ups & 3 Downs From "Lockdown"

7. Down - The Commonwealth Vs. The Swarm Of Walkers

The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 17 Daryl Lance
AMC

Throughout the series, we have seen Daryl and co. deal with a plethora of swarming zombies with only a cunning plan and a few tools to put a stop to the undead. And yet, these walking corpses seem to be too much for the Commonwealth's soldiers.

Slowly walking towards the walls that protect their society, Mercer and Rosita join their fellow soldiers to assess the situation and stop them from reaching their checkpoint. But as soon as they finish a brief conversation about Sebastian, some of their comrades have already found themselves in a sticky situation.

While trying to divide the herd and take them away from the Commonwealth, one of the trucks somehow flips over with no explanation that feels more forced than natural, just so Mercer and Rosita can swoop in to save the soldiers (at least for one of them). They may be major characters and a fun spectacle to watch, but this came off more as something for them to do more than dealing with a major threat.

Despite this society and its army having remained operational since the initial outbreak, the whole scene questions the actual ability and instincts of the army. While it sets them up as an opposing force unlike any other, this moment undermines them in a big way - as everyone's favourite survivors have dealt with bigger threats with much smaller options at their disposal.
