The Walking Dead Season 11 Review - 6 Ups & 2 Downs From "What's Been Lost"

7. Down - Lance Quick Transition From Madness

The Walking Dead
AMC

As fans will know, Lance was punished for playing a big part in the catastrophe of Founders Day that eventually led to the death of Pamela's son, Sebastian. Imprisoned with the zombified young man, the governor locks them both up and forces Lance to feed him with one of the deceased people who worked under him.

In order for Carol's plan to work and rescue her people, she and Daryl attempt to free the former deputy governor from his prison, only to find that Lance has seemingly become unhinged. Covered in blood and twirling a coin in his hands while talking to himself, he was certainly not in a good place.

While he literally lived with his actions, the timeframe from last week's and this week's episodes don't indicate that a large jump has occurred that would have broken him so quickly. But that is not the biggest insult to this particular scene.

Just before freeing him, the prisoner seems to quickly shake off his behaviour as though it was nothing and reverts back to his former self. With more awareness today about mental health, his quick transition from madness to sanity is one that doesn't come off as natural or earned, but rather just an excuse to justify the actions against him later on in the episode.
