The Walking Dead Season 11 Review - 6 Ups & 2 Downs From "What's Been Lost"
5. Up - Eugene Clings To Hope
Variant focussed heavily on Eugene last week, taking the fall for Max's plan to reveal the true nature of Sebastian Milton in front of everyone. Confronting Mercer and his fellow soldiers, he confessed to him the crime that he claims to have committed and was soon imprisoned.
Returning to briefly exchange a few words with Yumiko while she visits him in prison, Eugene learns about the capture of their friends and the cost his actions put them in. One of the only few people left to be imprisoned by the Commonwealth, the lawyer tells him about the situation that Pamela put her in and the potential that he will never see the light of day again. Unwilling to give up on them, Eugene tells her he believes in hope and that they will all come through the dark times as they have countless times before.
Eugene may only have one brief scene this week, but it was a great one that actor Josh McDermitt was able to deliver with an emotional weight that shined through. Giving his character gravitas while believing in the concept of hope, it's a charming and bittersweet moment that was certainly needed in the recently grim series of backstabbing and murders.
