The Walking Dead Season 11 Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs From "Acheron Part 1 & 2"

9. The Slightly Convenient Storytelling

The Walking Dead Season 11
AMC

The Walking Dead has always had a slight issue with convenience, whether it's to do with the plot armour of its main characters, or its lucky plot twists and unexplained character interactions, and Acheron is no exception to this trend.

Early in the premiere, Maggie returns to Alexandria to find that some of her old crew have happened upon the battered camp, having just stumbled across their old leader's friends on their travels. They appear without warning, and their backstory is barely touched upon.

Several of these newcomers are definitely poised to pay big roles moving forward, so we'll have to wait and see how they develop in the coming weeks.

The final part of the episode comes with a mysterious twist in the Commonwealth. As Eugene, Ezekiel, Princess and Yumiko begin to escape their captors, Yumiko happens upon a piece a paper on a packed notice board that just so happens to reference something from her past, forcing them to stay.

This reveal ultimately feel a touch inorganic, and though it poses some big questions about what the Commonwealth is hiding, the twist feels unearned.
