The Walking Dead Season 11 Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs From "Promises Broken"

4. UP: Negan Bares His Soul

The Walking Dead
AMC

A recurring development throughout the season thus far has been the uneasy alliance of Negan and Maggie, both of whom have changed immeasurably since they last saw each other.

Interestingly, Negan has actually spent much of the season trying to make things work between them, given the fact they're now on the same side, though Maggie is still justifiably holding out.

In Promises Broken, as he trains her to act like a Whisperer and herd walkers, Negan gets a stand-out moment where he attempts to show just how much he's grown and how desperately he wants to remain with the group.

Talking about the war with Rick, he openly admits that if he could go back in time, he'd kill everyone to avoid the conflict, a statement that shocks Maggie but perfectly captures the idea that Negan wants to change, and sees honesty as the best path to gaining someone's respect.

It's a stirring scene, hinting at a possible peace between the pair, and giving Jeffrey Dean Morgan yet another opportunity to steal the show with his performance.
