The Walking Dead Season 11 Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs From "Promises Broken"

5. UP: Negan & Maggie Embrace Their Inner Whisperer

The Walking Dead
AMC

The pacing is great, the ending exciting, but perhaps the most rewarding aspect of the episode comes from Negan and Maggie and their daring plan to destroy the Reapers, find their stolen food, and save Daryl.

Thanks to Daryl's sly undercover work in the previous episode, Promises Broken finds Negan, Maggie, Gabriel and Elijah fully aware of what they're up against. Knowing they're outnumbered, they decide to take a page out of Alpha's playbook and amass an army of walkers dressed as Whisperers.

Much of the episode sees Negan teaching Maggie how to herd the dead for later use, and offers a typically amusing Negan scene when he reveals he's kept hold of his own Whisperer mask for "sentimental" reasons.

In the end, the unlikely pair work together well, and the use of Alpha's tactics does wonders to emphasise the show's long-standing theme of adaptation and survival at all costs.
