That's another thing, Carl was utterly desperate to seek revenge on the Saviours, though his motives surely have to be questioned. Before setting out, the only action the Saviours had taken against the group was the killing of Denise.

Are fans seriously supposed to believe that Carl was close enough to Denise to risk his life to avenge her? Did they even share a scene together other than the surgery which left him without an eye?

And besides, the mission was to seek help for Maggie. Carl wasn't thinking of her, he was looking at straight-up revenge, and Rick was quite happy to let his son hop in for the ride. Carl's motives were incredible shaky, yet he was adamant about going on the trip. It wasn't genuine, it wasn't believable, and it was all purely contrived to ensure he'd be thrown down in front of Negan.
