As well as Romero films and cult zombie classics, Nicotero also paid homage to a rather more unexpected influence this year. In the same episode that we got the Creepshow walker, there was also a tribute to the John Hughes classic Sixteen Candles.

The coming-of-age comedy might seem to have little in common with The Walking Dead, but Nicotero has said that the dinner scene in Say Yes with Rick and Michonne was directly made to feel like Sixteen Candles:

"I just wanted the audience to really feel that part of their relationship so that when she realises that she could lose him, it’s just devastating to her."
