The Walking Dead Season 7: 4 Ups & 5 Downs From 'Service'

2. Too Much Negan

I really want Negan to work as a villain. Like most Walking Dead fans, I was immeasurably hyped for his arrival, excited by Jeffrey Dean Morgan's casting, and impressed enough by the first impression of him in the Season 6 finale.

Since then, however, it's been a little hit-and-miss. There's an undeniable joy in Morgan's performance that helps carry the character, and some of the lines he gets to deliver are wonderful (his "you are creepy as sh*t" one to Father Gabriel was a standout of the episode).

At the same time, there's a feeling that less may be more with him at the moment. We've seen Negan do his worst, so some of his threats can come off as a little empty. A lot of his lines fall flat or just come off as a bit too ridiculous, even ones lifted from the comics (there's a hint of being lost in translation, and having to tone the language down probably doesn't help). It also doesn't help that he gets so many.

Negan has been granted a lot of screentime so far this season, and he talks and he smirks and then talks and smirks some more. It's the only note we've seen from him, and while it can work, the character needs a few more to play - or if they're sticking with that one-note, then it needs less of it.
