The Walking Dead Season 7: 5 Ups And 3 Downs From 'Bury Me Here'

2. Benjamin Only Lived To Die (And It Was Massively Signposted)

Ever since he first appeared on the show, Benjamin has been marked for death. A nice, idealistic young kid who wants to learn and fight and help make the world a better place, he was not the kind of character destined to be long for this world. They then went further than that in establishing a relationship with Morgan, which heavily signalled that his death would be the catalyst for Morgan fighting back (albeit not in these circumstances, given the character's mental state).

They went further still in this episode: everything Benjamin did in this episode, from being so in awe of Carol and wanting to learn from her, to having a quiet moment with Morgan, to the repeated mentions of a mysterious girl, and then his insulting of Jared, all served as a massive signpost towards his inevitable death.

They tried to cause some confusion with the actual shooting scene by cutting away in a typical Walking Dead misdirect, but it was clear that his time was up. He served his purpose (and being fair, it did end up working well for Morgan), it just would've been nice if he'd been more of a character, and less someone just waiting to die for the sake of another's development.
