In the comics, Negan is The Walking Dead's most iconic villain, and All Out War is one of the most iconic story arcs, spanning multiple issues across a huge length of in-world time.

It remains to be seen just how much the show covers it, but it's a fair bet that the first eight episodes of Season 8 will be tackling the war, if not the entire season (it's certainly big enough).

That means the show will be holding a lot in reserve for then, but after so much setup it does need to give us something now. It can still hold off on the epic battles for next year, but it'd be great to kick things off now, rather than leaving us tantalisingly on the edge before the eighth season.
