The Walking Dead Season 7 Finale: 3 Ups & 5 Downs From 'The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life'

3. Negan Being Negan

The show had a couple of chances to kill Negan off tonight, with him being in Michonne's crosshairs and getting attacked by Zombie Sasha, but obviously they were never actually going to die that. Negan is the Big Bad, and he's going to be around for a long time, which places a big question mark over just how successful the adaptation of All Out War will be.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is having a great time in the role - even if there should be serious concerns about the potential lower back issues it might be causing - but it's not a whole lot of fun watching him (though I realise he's more of a love him or hate him character).

One of the big problems has been constant throughout, which is that he just never shuts the f**k up. All the classic hallmarks are here: joke, lean back, make a threat, mention Lucille, crack another crude joke, lean back, job done. It's tiresome, especially given there's not much to back it up here.

He has Carl in his sights, but delays it to deliver another grandstanding speech, like watching a less sadistic version of the premiere play out again. And he somehow ends up on the retreat, despite the fact he had the clear advantage on two different occasions here. For someone who is supposed to be the ultimate evil, the baddest of the bad, a ruthless villain who gets the job done, he looks like a bit of an idiot.
