The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Review - 5 Ups & 5 Downs From "Become"

5. Up: Another Returning Face

The Ones Who Live
AMC

Though "Become" is, for the most part, a maddeningly predictable affair, that doesn't mean it's entirely devoid of surprises, the biggest of which is unquestionably the return of Walking Dead mainstay Gabriel Stokes.

This may sound like an odd crossover, but it's worth remembering back to seasons eight and nine, when Gabriel and Jadis were growing romantically close before she flew off to join the CRM. In "Become," it's revealed that the pair have been meeting up every year since Rick's disappearance, and it's with this twist that the episode's flashbacks come into play.

Jadis seems to be going to her former love interest for confession, to think on her sins or, perhaps more poignantly, recall her old life and how good she had it. She doesn't tell Gabriel about Rick, but then he doesn't give anything away either, instead keeping focus on Jadis.

These scenes carry with them a certain level of tenderness - an air of what-could-have-been shared between two people whose lives took radically different turns - and offer great insight into Jadis's allegiances. It's good to have the creepy as sh*t priest back.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
