The Walking Dead's 10 Best Farewell Episodes

4. Michonne - What We Become

The Walking Dead Michonne
AMC

Like Siddiq’s episode, Michonne’s exit revolves around the theme of guilt - albeit hallucinogenic-induced guilt. In The World Before, Michonne agrees to help Virgil get back to his family on an island in exchange for a cache of weapons to help in the Whisperer War. Turns out, Virgil is a mad man who locks Michonne (and others) up and gives her hallucinogenic tea.

Under the influence, Siddiq materialises and blames Michonne for his death. In reality, it’s not her fault, but on a subconscious level she does harbor some deep-seated guilt for allowing Dante to slip through the cracks and join the community. This is just one of Michonne’s hallucinations. The other depicts a reality in which Michonne never rescued Andrea in season two’s finale, joins the Saviors, and even takes Negan’s role in The Last Day on Earth. This culminates with Rick killing her.

It’s a harrowing, entertaining alternate history to watch unfold, but not one that buttons up logically for the simple reason Michonne never expressed any regret about saving Andrea. That said, this is still an entertaining send off for the badass sword-wielding warrior who we will no doubt see again in the near future.
