The West Wing Cast: Where Are They Now?

23. Lily Tomlin - Debbie Fiderer

The West Wing
NBC

Mrs Landingham’s replacement as President Bartlet’s secretary came in the form of Lily Tomlin’s Debbie Fiderer, who was introduced in the fourth season as eccentric, opinionated and ultimately well-matched for dealing with President Bartlet’s own quirks. She remained a consistent presence until the show’s conclusion, despite little being revealed about her (aside from her involvement in Charlie’s recruitment) and her having minimal involvement in any storylines.

Beginning in variety comedy in the 1960s, Lily Tomlin has switched between television, theatre and film throughout her career. She only requires an Oscar to become an EGOT, having won a Tony, a Grammy and six Emmys for her comedy, drama and voiceover work.

Having appeared in the likes of Desperate Housewives and Damages following The West Wing’s conclusion, Tomlin’s most successful project has been Netflix’s Grace & Frankie, which is currently pending a seventh and final season. Reuniting her with Martin Sheen, the show has become one of the streaming platform’s longest running and critically acclaimed, despite a shaky reception to its first season. The only film she has appeared in since 2015 is the animated Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, though she has given no indication of retiring.
