The West Wing Cast: Where Are They Now?
19. Tim Matheson - John Hoynes
Playing true to the
perception that the Vice Presidency is a largely ceremonial position
that exists solely to strengthen the appeal of a ticket to a broader base of
voters, John Hoynes plays a very minor part in the West Wing's fictionalised White House. He has only brief storylines, mostly emerging from how marginalised he felt in the role after
initially being the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in the election
won by President Bartlet.
Hoynes was rushed out of the series seemingly in order to facilitate season four’s cliffhanger plot, which sees the 25th amendment invoked with no Vice President in place to assume the Presidency. He later returned as a potential successor as Bartlet’s second term drew to a close, but was never really presented as a serious contender, with a scandal writing him out of the contest.
A two time Emmy nominee for Best Guest Star for his role on the show, Tim Matheson has been acting since the age of 14 in the early 1960s, most notably playing one of the lead roles in National Lampoon’s Animal House, which he parodied with later appearances in Van Wilder and the American Pie franchise. He has extensively directed in his later years, whilst continuing to appear in small roles across the television spectrum, most recently on Netflix’s animated Fast & Furious spin-off.
