The Witcher Season 2: 10 Things We'd Love To See

6. ...Gwent?

The Witcher
CD Projekt RED

Alright, so this one is maybe a little harder to sell. It's not a large or compelling plot point, it isn't related to the books, frankly it's not even all that appropriate outside of the game world, but Gwent was a factor in the third game that did a surprising amount of work for the tone.

When the plot was particularly heavy, when something tragic has occurred or a deep loss has happened and the player needed catharsis, Gwent was a distraction that was always there. The idea of Geralt sitting down in a bar, notched sword on his back and bloodied trophies next to him, and playing a couple rounds of budget Magic the Gathering with some local peasants was indisputably hilarious.

When the world became a little too serious, the chance to pause your quest of saving it in order to become the Gwent champion of Redania was just too good to pass up.

Plus it was surprisingly useful; at least one character quest hinged on it and multiple other quests had it as an alternative to a violent outcome. Truly the printed paper is mightier than the sword.

Though a reference would no doubt be lapped up by its adoring fans, the opportunity to base an episode arc around something as laughably simple as a card game is one we really should consider, even if only ever in theory.

My passion for all things Sci Fi goes back to my earliest days, when old VHS copies of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet gripped my tiny mind with their big, noisy vehicles and terrifying puppets. I'd like to say my taste got more refined over the years, but between the Warhammer, Space Dandy and niche Star Wars EU books, perhaps it just got broader. I've enjoyed games of all calibre since I figured out that dice weren't just for eating, and have written prose ever since I was left unsupervised with some crayons next to a white wall. I got away with it by calling it "schoolwork" for as long as I could, and university helped me keep the charade going a while longer. Since my work began to get published, it's made all those long hours repainting the walls seem worth it.
