The Witcher Season 2: 10 Things We'd Love To See

2. The Signs

Present more heavily in the games than the books, the rudimentary magic called ‘Signs’ employed by Geralt and other Witchers represent a wealth of potential for the show.

We already saw a good use of Aard during the Striga fight, but that’s far from the only spell in their arsenal. From the object-shielding Quen to the mind-altering Axii, to the movement inhibiting Yrden and the good old fashioned flamethrower we get from Igni, the role Signs can play in an episode are as broad as the writer’s imagination.

Not as strong as the magic used by sorcerers like Yennefer, and certainly not anywhere near to Ciri’s untamed potential, Signs can add a twist to a fight scene or an intense standoff that makes them unique.

Plus, when do we ever see the leading men in our gritty fantasy using magic? How often did Aragorn or Jon Snow set an enemy on fire with their mind? Signs are a key part in making The Witcher stand out in a sea of gritty fantasy shows.

My passion for all things Sci Fi goes back to my earliest days, when old VHS copies of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet gripped my tiny mind with their big, noisy vehicles and terrifying puppets. I'd like to say my taste got more refined over the years, but between the Warhammer, Space Dandy and niche Star Wars EU books, perhaps it just got broader. I've enjoyed games of all calibre since I figured out that dice weren't just for eating, and have written prose ever since I was left unsupervised with some crayons next to a white wall. I got away with it by calling it "schoolwork" for as long as I could, and university helped me keep the charade going a while longer. Since my work began to get published, it's made all those long hours repainting the walls seem worth it.
