The X-Files: 10 Best Characters Who Appeared After Season One

7. Jeffrey Spender

The X-Files Diana Fowley
Fox

The Cigarette Smoking Man is easily the greatest villain in The X-FIles. He was there right from the beginning and, over time, his background, his goals, his personality all began to take shape as the show's writers pondered what could be going on beyond the smoke and mirrors.

One of the biggest characters who helped show the Smoking Mans's true nature was his son, Jeffrey Spender. Spender was introduced to the show when his mother, Cassandra Spender, reappeared after a possible alien abduction.

Spender originally was a huge rival to Mulder and Scully, even taking over the X-Files with Diana Fowley following Mulder's forceful removal. Spender served as an unknowing pawn to his father's schemes, up until he discovered that he was in fact Mulder's half-brother, a shocking truth that completely changed the dynamic between Spender and his father.

Spender eventually attempted to break away from his father's influence, an attempt that was cut short after the Smoking Man shot Spender in the face and horribly disfigured him with severe burns.

Spender endured quite a lot in his own search for the truth about himself and the world around him. Even though he was misguided and unable to believe the truth at first, Spender quickly became a frequent confidant for Mulder and Scully.

Spender even went so far as to protect Mulder and Scully's son from those hunting him, a redemption story few in the show's runtime got the chance to go through.
