Duane Barry was a Vietnam veteran who suffered from extreme mental anguish following his time in the war and his multiple alien abductions.

The sheer stress of everything he had experienced caused Duane to crack and escape from his mental hospital by taking his doctor hostage. The disturbed veteran took his doctor with him as he escaped, eventually leading to a hostage situation inside a travel agency in an attempt to give his own doctor up as a victim to the alien abductors' experiments.

Mulder was eventually asked to assist with the hostage negotiations due to his willingness to listen to Duane's tales of horrific experimentation and attempt to trick him into giving up peacefully.

Mulder and Duane talked for hours, and eventually, Mulder felt sure that Duane was telling the truth. It took an intervention by Scully to shake Mulder out of his beliefs and order a sniper to shoot Duane in the chest.

Though this should have been the end for Duane's story, it wasn't. Duane survived his wound and escaped again, this time to exact revenge on Mulder for betraying his trust.

The veteran abducted Scully and took her to Skyland Mountain, where Scully was then abducted, proving Duane correct. Duane is one of very few that actually succeeded in his goals and left a permanent impact on Mulder and Scully's life that would affect them for the rest of the series.
